The Wolfman of the Track

By: Tristan Schilling

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Some things at the Indianapolis 500 are expected such as checkered flags, beer and loud noises. But one person that goes unnoticed but has become a regular visitor and friend to the teams is Charles “Chucky” “Wolfman" Lynn.

Lynn has cerebral palsy a condition that affects movement, muscle tone and/or posture, but that hasn’t stopped him from going to the track and seeing his friends every year for the past 45 years

As soon as the calendar turns to May Lynn and his girlfriend Lara Lay are at the track selling the Indianapolis Star and USA Today newspapers.

“He [is] mostly a main staple of  the month of May everyday delivering papers,” said CJ Nielson, a five year indy car crew member.

He doesn’t just sell newspapers at a stand in the track but instead he rides around on a custom bike built for him by the race teams that participate in the Indy 500.

The bike is built as a collaboration with each of the teams and each year his is sponsored by a different team. This year he was sponsored by Team Penske and the wrap on his bike changes with each team that sponsors him.

He's close enough with the teams that they gave him the nickname “wolfman” from the call noise he makes when he is at the track, it’s a call letting the teams know he's coming.

Lynn said the first time he went to the track was when he was 18 his cousin and brother went to the track and he convinced his mom to let him go one year as well.

Ever since then he has worked his was back to the track every year.

After each race Lynn gets a picture with the winner and the trophy on the brickyard. Lynn said that one time Tony

Kanaan pushed him on to the bricks but it was all in joking fun because Kanaan and Lynn are actually good friends.

With this years race over he will be back again around next year to sell more newspapers and with another bike wrap to look stylish in.
